Microbiology membrane filtration captures microorganisms from a measured sample volume on a membrane that can be transferred to culture medium for incubation and enumeration. Membrane color and grid contrast support colony recognition, while sterile individual packaging or integrated filtration units can reduce handling steps and contamination risk.

Selection should follow the analytical method and consider sample matrix, organism recovery, membrane chemistry, pore size, diameter, color, grid, sterility, holder compatibility and incubation system. White membranes with dark grids are common for colored colonies; dark membranes with light grids can improve contrast for pale colonies.
